When In Doubt, Think China

Another example of herbs for ADHD that have received a lot of attention over the years is Chinese medicinal herbs. Many parents are now turning to Chinese herbs for ADHD as a convenient alternative to stimulant medication. As with St. John’s Wort, Chinese medicinal herbs can be used either in a pill form or in a liquid, cream, or tea. The Chinese believe that by drinking green tea or by ingesting the herb Shatavari, they can calm hyperactivity and ease twitching. However, there’s no evidence that these herbs for ADHD are helpful for controlling the symptoms of the disorder.

Biloba May Help

Last but certainly not least, there’s the herb Biloba. More than a century ago, people realized that adding Biloba to their coffee helped them focus better. Today, this herb is used as an herbal supplement for ADHD and other problems like depression, aging, and heart disease. Unfortunately, in clinical trials, Biloba is ineffective as an antidepressant because it doesn’t change neurotransmitters’ levels in the brain enough. This is because the herb doesn’t increase blood flow to the brain; instead, it has a sedative effect on the nerve cells. Thus, it doesn’t provide much benefit in reducing anxiety or depression and may actually increase feelings of irritation and agitation.

Last But Not Least, Vitamins

What can you do to alleviate your ADHD symptoms? Supplementing with vitamins and minerals, such as B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, and zinc, and avoiding stimulants such as sugar and caffeine, are effective treatments. However, it’s important to remember that the best approach is to avoid the use of conventional medications altogether. Herbal supplements for ADHD may prove to be your best option.
